Art is often viewed as a luxury to access, but we understand it to be a necessary form of resistance. Somethin’ Different is a project that allows Black artists living in the South to lead the conversations on how we experience Money, Power, Pleasure, and Relationships. We’re providing real support by Paying Black Artists in the South, creating spaces for them to share their own stories, and driving resources to them for continued creation. We’re aiming to make some radical dreams real and illustrate the significance of, and reliance on, ART as a catalyst for social change. We’re writing this narrative through the Arts.

connections

Help lift this project by connecting us to people and groups offering services and support to Black Artists in the South. We’re creating a network of creative and professional support for the visual, performance, and culinary artists included in this project. Donations of tangible art supplies, services, and abstract support to our Artist Pantry are greatly needed and appreciated!

Community

Community is how this whole things happens! While we do the work to connect Artists, we encourage you to make necessary connections where you live. We need each other to get through it all. Talk to your people about what’s being said in the Art that inspires you. Move these conversations at your dinner and policy tables.

Find Artists who are creating near you and support them consistently.
Find Organizing Groups who are working near you and support them consistently.
These are the necessary freedoms.

Join this conversation by using #somethindifferent in online spaces so we can see you too!

We recognize the inherent value of creative work and are committed to pay every Black artist. We want to support Black Artists thriving on their own terms, not just doing what they have to in order to survive. We’re building Somethin’ Different in our resourcing model that moves along an intentional line of, “hands off trust,” focused on:

Direct support: The resources go to Black artists. Period.

No strings: The support can’t have restrictive conditions.

Respect Black Artists: We don’t dictate creative vision.

$5 will go in somebody’s pocket

I GOT 5 ON IT

This project moves through people power that pours directly into the Black Artist field.
