This project started as a series of poems, melodies, and memories scribbled across a few different journals. The pieces of conversations tucked into this project are moments of clarity I visited over years of conversations with community organizers, family members, nighttime lovers, and longtime friends. I would draw attention to an issue and they would openly challenge me around the things I thought I already knew. Then I’d challenge my pen.
I challenged what I had been accepting and I decided what needed to change.
In demanding more in my relationships with other people, romance, friendship, support, money, the state, myself...
I allowed myself to think beyond limitations I’d learned and let new possibilities open up. New freedoms. New dreams.
This is the music that poured out after years of fighting for my own liberation:
as I am. as a freedom fighter. as a homegirl. as muva. as an artist. as the list goes on.
It started the process that would become an open invitation for others to look around, look inward, and do the same.
